In The News
There’s always lots of activity being undertaken in pure silence around the Club. When it’s just so, sometimes it needs to be typed in silence to allow you to soak it up in silence as well.
Welcome to 2015!
Well in case you missed it, it’s summertime at Melbourne Freedivers Club. Whilst the summer heat has surely been lacking, the water time has not! February and March are known as probably the best times to get into local waters as the temperature remains pleasant and the summer car parking and beach towel madness has been well left behind.
If you’ve been left wondering, read on!
New Members and Renewals are now due! If you’re keen to begin your freediving training and find new buddies, now is the time to get psyched up. As a member in 2014, you’ll need to renew your membership to continue to enjoy pool training, freediving excursions and social events. Click here now and get it happening!
To continue your part in the MFC’s development, we’d ask you to please renew your 2015 Melbourne Freedivers Club Membership. Membership renewals are due on the 1st of January 2015. Remember to keep your Australian Freediving Association membership up-to-date as well, this is compulsory for MFC active members.
The renewal fees for 2015 for existing members is $50 compared to $75 for new members. If you have not done so in the last 6 months, it is also recommended to attend a Safety induction as a refresher.
Safety Induction refreshes are free to attend for existing members, book in via the booking tool like you do for a regular pool training session.
WEEKLY POOL TRAINING
After the summer hiatus, weekly pool training is up and running at full steam, get back into the swing of things and keep your breath-hold developing. Training continues:
- Mondays: Prahran
- Wednesdays: Footscray
- Thursdays: Geelong
LOOKING BACK ON 2014
Well, 2014 was a massive year for the Melbourne Freedivers Club and we thank you for being a part of the very first year of operation! It was a great start and we’d be excited to see you continue being a part of the club’s development.
From an early start of 10 members in March, we quickly grew to around 40 members, amazing growth when you consider other interstate freediving clubs have been operating for over 8 years and contain around 60-80 members.
The club has grown in leaps and bounds during 2014 and with your continued support, 2015 looks to be an even bigger and better year.
Training and Events
The committee is working to secure regular access to aquatic venues and training opportunities. As well as the weekly social dives there will be the opportunity to join the Depth National Championships in Bali in August with several social dives and social nights too!
We recommend members who have not completed a formal freediving course, per the club recommendations, attend one within 6 months of joining. The club acknowledges recognised freediving education systems including AIDA, Apnea International, Apnea Total and SSI amongst others.
Local Freediving organisation, WaterMaarq (watemaarq.com) offers discounts to MFC members on courses, training and excursions too. [Disclosure: Club President, Marlon Quinn, is owner of WaterMaarq Freediving]
Feel welcome to ask other members for advice and guidance from their personal experience with freediving education and training, or contact a local Freediving Instructor via the club.
Pool Training: In 2014, the MFC’s first year of operation, members enjoyed unprecedented access to three pool training venues across Prahran, Footscray and Geelong. All sessions are privately run with exclusive lane use for members.
Social Freedive Excursions: Led by the club’s own Training Officer, Luca Morandini, regular excursions to Cape Schanck, Flinders, Portsea and Sorrento for a dive session were executed!
Specialist Workshops: With club partner, Neuralign Personal Training and Yoga, tailored breathing training workshops were offered during the cooler months as a high performance development aid.
Club member, Matt Kovacs also ran a custom workshop for neckweight building which was a hit!
Social Events: Along with Shark 3D at Imax, the Big Blue movie event at the Astor Theatre, National Geographic presentation at the Arts Centre, there were regular casual drinks and meals to be had after training.
Club Apparel: Club t-shirts were launched in 2014, designed in-house by our very own PR Officer, Luna Lita.
Beginners to Experienced: The MFC caters to freedivers of all levels and provides a safe and open environment to explore the development of your breathhold and freediving. With certified instructors literally floating around the club, there’s always plenty of opportunity to learn!
Local Community: The MFC brings you a local presence where you can find hot tips on freediving gear, training techniques, dive spots and best of all, buddies to freedive with!
Club Patron: We are lucky to have in our midst, Ant Williams, world-ranking freediving athlete that can hold his breath for over 8 minutes and swim 223m in a swimming pool on one breath.
For 2015: Weekly training sessions in the pool will continue across our three training centres, specialist workshops are set to continue raising the bar, the National Freediving Pool Championships are forecast to be held in Melbourne in May/June, the first time ever in Victoria and more of everything on top of an already stellar 2014.
So, don’t hold back, submit your membership application now and join us as we continue the growth of Victorian Freediving.
